How to tell if your PC or Laptop has a Virus…

and what to do about it.

Tips 21 - How to tell if your PC has a Virus

If your computer is giving you problems and you are wondering if your PC or laptop has a virus then there are a few steps you can take to help you. I have detailed those steps here in this other previous article to help assist you in figuring out what is wrong with your computer or laptop. If you suspect that your PC is already infected then here are some steps to take to help further assist you.

How can you tell if your Computer has a Virus?

    1. Run a full system scan:  It is imperative that you run a full system scan to help you determine exactly how badly infected your computer is. This is done by an anti-virus program. There are many programs out there but one I have been using for about eight years or more is called McAfee total. This program has everything from a Firewall to Spam filters, Anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners to help fully protect your PC or laptop. It was not until I began to use this program that I noticed just how easy it was to download a virus into your PC, how many websites are actually malicious and just how vulnerable an unprotected computer is to hackers and viruses. They have it on sale here on Amazon. You can also scan your PC or laptop with this program called Error Nuker.

    2. Perform a program and file scan: Chances are if your computer is infected that the program (virus) is running in the background of your system already as it has been installed, or installed itself on its own. This could have been done if anyone downloaded a music file, program or something from an un-trusted source. Programs such as Ares, Limewire, Kazaa and Torrent files sites help to distribute many of these infected programs. The sites are not the culprit here. It is the up-loaders who use these sites to flood them with their malicious and corrupted files. You can use this program called Reimage. This program will scan your computer for files to see if it is infected and tell you what further actions to take.

    3. Registry is where they hide: Your computer registry is the first place most virus or spy-ware programs hide as this is the root or brain of the computer. It is there in the registry, among all the legitimate programs, that these malicious viruses run undetected for so long. Your computer system is fooled by them into thinking these are legitimate programs which need to start and run each and every time your computer is turned on. There is a great Registry scanner which can help you see if there are problems within your registry. The program is called Registry Fixer and it will find and pinpoint to any registry errors your computer may have. Be sure to follow all the steps as far as backing up your PC registry since this is the Brain of your computer.

If you are running Windows XP and want to help speed up your computer there is a great article to help you get rid of all your 'temp' files called "How to get rid of Temp files on Windows XP". As with everything else always use caution when it comes to helping you protect your PC or laptop. Do not surf the web without a Firewall on and do not continue to use your PC without an anti-virus program installed. I hope these steps on how to tell if your computer has a virus have been helpful to you.
