Ten Secrets Burglars don't want you to know about

Knowing how the criminal mind works, thinks and acts is the best way you can be ready to protect yourself, your home, business and your family from them. This is why Tips21.com has put together a list of ten tips burglars do not want you to know about. As the old saying goes, knowing is half the battle. However, being ready and prepared guarantees you'll win the war.

Ten Secrets Burglars do not Want you to Know about

    1. Some burglars have admitted one of the ways they gain easy access to a house is because of this trick. While working for someone cleaning their yard or something they simply ask to use your bathroom. Once inside they may un-latch the bathroom window in order to make it easier for them to gain entry when they return.
Tip: While there many hard working, decent people out there, be careful. If someone was hired to do some work in your yard or home and you let them in your home, just be sure to check your windows and locks when they are done

    2. Burglars or intruders will always look for newspapers and mail that pile up in front of your house. They may deliberately even leave you a flyer just to see how long it may take you to remove it.
Tip: Never let your mail and newspapers pile up in front of your home. If you are planning a long trip or vacation, have a neighbor or friend come by to pick it up for you.

Protect yourself and Family before it happens3. Decorative glass in front of your home is very beautiful. However, many burglars will use this as a way to be able to look inside of your home. This way they can see if you have an alarm system installed and even if it's armed.
Tip: In case you do have decorative glass or windows in front of your home, always be sure to close the blinds, drapes or curtains. If you have an alarm system, be sure the control pad is not easily visible to an outsider.

    4. Most intruders will admit to not knowing how to crack a safe where you may keep all your valuables or having the time to do so. However, they don't really need to since they can just take it with them if it’s not bolted down.
Tip: If you have a safe in your home or business, be sure the first thing you do is bolt it down to the floor. This will make it more difficult for anyone who may break into your home or business to carry it with them.Keep Burglars out

    5. Good security companies will protect all entries points. However, sometimes a company (or if you installed the security alarm system yourself) will make the mistake of not protecting small windows in the bathroom, kitchen or top floors. Burglars know this fully well.
Tip: Be sure to have all windows protected. Leaving just one un-armed can be enough to allow an intruder entry into your home. Also, it is a good idea to place motion detectors as well.

    6. First place a burglar will check for valuables when they break into your home is the sock or dresser drawers. The Bedside tables or medicine cabinets are also great places to check as well.

Tip: Be sure to hide your valuables in a much better spot. Your kid’s room may make a better hiding spot. There are some really good secret safes you can use such as these available from Amazon.

    7. All Burglars or intruders love trees, bushes or shrubs that are unkempt since they help to block the view to windows and doors. This will allow them more time to work on breaking into your home or business and guard them from the view of a neighbor.
Tip: Be sure to always keep your trees, shrubs or bushes trimmed; specially those that are next to a window which may help obstruct the view of a neighbor or give a hiding spot to an intruder.

    8. While you were running late for work and fumbling with your umbrella, you forgot to arm your system or maybe even left the door unlocked.
Tip: Burglars NEVER take a day off due to bad weather. Always be sure to arm your security system and make sure you lock all doors on your way out.

    9. Snow or tree leaves piling up while you are out of town on your driveway or front  of your home is a dead giveaway in letting a burglar or intruder know when you go on vacation
Tip: If you are planning a long vacation or trip, be sure to have someone clean the snow and tree leaves around your driveway or entrance.

    10. The easiest way for a burglar to know no one is home is by the quietness they will hear coming from inside.

Tip: Hearing the TV or a loud radio on in a house deters a burglar more than anything because it gives the impression someone is home even when they are not. Lights and appliances turning on and off are also a big deterrent. Be sure to add timers that turn on appliances, radios and TV at different hours of the day. This will always make it sound and seem as if someone is home.
