Security Mistakes Homeowners should Avoid Making
There is nothing worse than having your home burglarized. Tips 21 has compiled a list of security mistakes homeowners should be aware of in order to avoid making them. This means doing all you can to prevent having your privacy violated, your valuables and property stolen and your sense of security lost. Children are the most affected since anytime break-ins happen, it can take a long time for the people to begin to feel safe in their own home again. Tips 21 recognizes the need for everyone to take a proactive stance when it comes to protecting their home, property and family. The key is to find the mistakes and to correct them before burglars or home intruders strike. Here are the top five to avoid making.
1. There is power in Light- Burglars & intruders love nothing more than a dark, poorly lit home. This gives them all the time they need to break in without fear of being seen. It is a known fact that well lit areas help to deter crimes. If you worry about wasting too much money on electricity bills there are many motion detection lights. These are great as they will only turn on when someone or something comes within its perimeter. Burglars despise well lit homes.
2. Unprotected Garage doors - Many people go to great lengths to protect their homes. They install top of the arts security systems but forget about their garage. Garages are not only an easy entry point to your home, but also it lets the intruders’ easy access to your tools as well. Adding a dead bolt lock to automatic garage doors is a plus for added security. These locks will come in handy around those times you go on vacation.

3. Installing cheap locks - Like in the movies there are many people you have a lock on their door that can be kicked or pushed in with little trouble. Anytime you use low-cost locks to protect your points of entry you are inviting intruders into your home. Be sure to replace all locks, not just the front or back. One weak point is all a burglar needs. One of the most highly recommended locks by locksmith’s professionals and companies like consumer reports are dead bolt locks. Dead bolt locks are very hard to kick in and extremely difficult to pick.
4. Most intruders will admit to not knowing how to crack a safe where you may keep all your valuables or having the time to do so. However, they don't really need to since they can just take it with them if it’s not bolted down.
Tip: If you have a safe in your home or business, be sure the first thing you do is bolt it down to the floor. This will make it more difficult for anyone who may break into your home or business to carry it with them.
5. Good security companies will protect all entries points. However, sometimes a company (or if you installed the security alarm system yourself) will make the mistake of not protecting small windows in the bathroom, kitchen or top floors. Burglars know this fully well.
Tip: Be sure to have all windows protected. Leaving just one un-armed can be enough to allow an intruder entry into your home. Also, it is a good idea to place motion detectors as well.
4. Leaving your Security system Un-armed - There is no greater mistake than to have a security system installed and not arming it. It is the same as not having one in the first place. As long as you make it a habit to arm your system each time you leave your home, you will be well protected.
5. No Alarm security system - Any burglar will tell you that they will rather break into a home without an alarm system than one without it. The thought of having a loud, attention getting horn is the last thing a burglar or intruder wants. This will only serve to alert neighbors who in turn will call the cops. With the advance in technology there are also many affordable home security systems as well. You may even get a discount on your homeowner's insurance.
Following these tips on security mistakes homeowners should avoid making will greatly reduce your chances of having your home invaded or burglarized and help to keep you and your family protected. In the end, that's what it's all about. You read "How to choose the right security system for you" if you need help or tips on which security system to get for you.
